Many of the classics we grew up with have been given new life because to the Megaways fad, and we can now enjoy them in a more modern context.

Yes, there are likely to be some cranky old conservative players who disagree, but the results speak for themselves. Medusa, a NextGen Gaming masterpiece that has already been published in two parts, the second of which became one of NextGen’s biggest blockbusters to date, is the next classic to undergo the Megaways treatment.

What you get is essentially Bonanza-style gameplay, with the usual six reels plus an extra reel, a random range of symbols from three to seven on each reel and spin (the crux of the Megaways game engine), a maximum of 117,649 ways to win, and, of course, cascading symbols and increasing multipliers during the free spins. The similarities, however, end there, as you will discover, since Medusa Megaways offers a fresh set of innovative features. This bad boy can be played from as little as 0.25 to as much as 25 Euros a spin across all devices, and it has two different return to player percentages depending on whether you trigger the bonus “organically” or by purchasing it.

As Medusa fans, we’re relieved to discover that the creators have stayed faithful to the source material sonically and aesthetically. Ancient Greek stone ruins and pink sky set the mood for this classic tale of Medusa, a gorgon who is said to have wings and poisonous snakes for hair. It’s a really scary image that switches to the inside of a temple when you hit the free spins. The visuals were designed to have a retro feel as a tribute to Medusa, who we also adore.

The highest paying icon is the Pegasus horse, which pays out 30 times your wager for landing 6 of them on a payline. Other icons include the standard A through 10 royals, silver rings, golden snakes, trojan shields, and talaria sandals. Aside from the scatter and the Soldier symbol*, which appears exclusively on the additional reel during the free spins feature (more on that later), the fearsome Medusa herself is the wild and substitutes for all other symbols.

Cascading symbols are used in the game, as they are in most Megaways slots. When a winning combination is formed, all matching symbols disappear and are replaced by a new set of symbols.

Features of the Medusa Megaways

Medusa Megaways is a feature-packed slot machine. Medusa’s Gaze is triggered if the bonus reel has one or more wild symbols. When this occurs, Medusa will cover the whole reel right below the wilds, revealing further wilds before vanishing again.

While the base game may have some promise, the real action occurs in the Free Spins bonus round, which awards 10 free games for landing three or more scatter symbols anywhere on the reels (or you can “Buy” the feature for 100 times your wager). Furthermore, any additional scatter symbol that falls on the reels will award you 5 extra free spins. The number of times the free spins feature may be retriggered by hitting 3 or more scatters is unlimited.

When activated, the Unlimited Win Multiplier begins at 2x and rises by 1 after each consecutive winning chain. In addition to the Medusa’s Gaze feature, which is active during free spins as well, the Snake Strike feature may activate to increase your chances of winning. The two snakes on the additional reel’s side should not be ignored. When one or more *soldiers appear on this reel, the snakes strike out at them, with the leftmost snake turning into a wild if it successfully strikes. The icon becomes a scatter if the right-side snake is used as an attacker.

Finally, after the game expires, the Temptation feature provides you the opportunity to pick one of two alternatives – to walk away with your winnings or to play the feature again in hope for additional large wins. Choose carefully, though, or you can wind up with something much worse.

Judgment on the Medusa Megaways

As you can see, Medusa Megaways is an extremely feature-rich slot machine. Don’t stress if this all seems strange to you. Once you begin going, you’ll realize how easy it is. While the base game is fairly balanced, the free spins bonus is where the majority of the excitement lies. We found the Temptation idea to be the most intriguing, however we did appreciate all of the elements. If anything, it’s comforting to know that even the worst bonuses come with a chance at redemption.

The maximum payout on Medusa Megaways is 50,000x the initial bet, however this is likely restricted depending on the size of the player’s wager. Whatever the case may be, we had a great time and think it not only met but even beyond our expectations. The curse of Medusa is stronger than ever thanks to Big Time Gaming’s brilliant creation.
